As time went on, our reach expanded beyond Cornwall and encompassed artists and events from across Devon and the entire South West of England, UK. One of our defining features has been the opportunity to showcase DJ mixes through our podcast series. Since our establishment, we have actively published podcast mixes from some of the most talented DJs in the South West. These mixes serve as a testament to the exceptional skills and creativity of our region's DJs, providing a platform for them to showcase their talent to a wider audience.

Artist Interview

...I warmed up for the mighty Ferry Corsten at Move, in Exeter.

Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ sound.

I’m Sugarshaker and I’ve been a house DJ for 25 years. During that time I have migrated in to playing Trance and Techno and I tend to mix it up when I can to keep it interesting. I rarely pay attention to genre boundaries and just go with what works.

What are your highlights of the past year and what is planned for the future?

This last year has been one of my favourite for a long time. I became resident DJ for the mighty Magic Hatstand; set up my own event, ‘Off the Grid’ alongside fellow DJ Justin (HERATIKS) and lastly, my favourite highlight, I warmed up for the mighty Ferry Corsten at Move, in Exeter.

Every year I say I’m going to do less gigs, but I love what I do and therefore I’m busier than ever. In the coming year I will be focusing on our ‘Off the Grid’ events whilst also focusing more on my Techno alias ‘ANIKEN’ (watch this space)!

Tell us something that you know now that you wished you knew when you first started DJing.

I wish I knew how lucky I was back then! The opportunities were there for the picking and climbing the ladder was actually relatively easy if you were good! Compared to how difficult it is these days to progress, where you now need to be a content manager, producer, influencer and gig manager. The challenge is more fierce than it has ever been. So yeah, I wish I’d been able to see in to the future as I know now how lucky I was.

What artists have inspired your DJ style?

I may be an odd ball when it comes to artist influence, as I’ve never really followed specific people. I listen to music blindly, so what I play is simply about what I think the dance floor will enjoy. I don’t Shazam other people’s sets, I literally deep dive, going through all the new releases and I buy what I’m feeling. It seems to work and I don’t pidgeon hole my own sound to one thing.

I do however, have a love for Trance classics, but then, who doesn’t?!

Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.
I wanted this podcast to showcase the style of music I’m really enjoying playing at the moment. I’ve gone for energetic house with plenty of groove, mixing vocal tracks with tougher, more driving ones.

I always select tracks that give me room to build the energy throughout the mix, rather than having everything at the same intensity from beginning to end. I will choose a mixture of current releases, different artists and throw in a couple of tracks that add something a little different, to keep it interesting, so this is the process I followed for my podcast.

For me, the most important thing is that every track has to make me visualise people dancing and I want the end result to feel like a proper club journey, with progression and variation, rather than simply putting together a list of tracks that sound similar.
