Artist Interview
...give me a dirty bassline and a strong female vocal...
Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ sound.
Hi, I’m Rebecca D. I only started DJing in August 2024, and it all began because I wanted to surprise my husband for his 50th birthday. I had a couple of lessons with DJ JustJack, got up there for a 30-minute set, and absolutely loved every second of it. After that I bought myself some decks to play at home, just for fun — I didn’t expect anything more to come from it.
Then out of the blue, Jack messaged me asking if I wanted to warm up at an event. I still don’t know how I got through that first set… I was shaking so much and had to keep reminding myself to smile. But I did it, and from there things just started happening. I’ve been lucky enough to play at some great little local venues, a few hilarious silent discos, open the main stage at Somerset Festival, and play the main stages at Homefarm Fest and Sunset Festival. I’m now a resident DJ for OAP in Plymouth, which still feels a bit surreal. I feel really privileged to have been given these opportunities.
When it comes to my style, I’m still finding my feet. I love most house genres and I’m happy to play all sorts, but give me a dirty bassline and a strong female vocal and I’m in my element. At the moment I’m really enjoying UK garage bassline and bass house — anything with a bit of grit and energy.

Be brave, say yes to what makes you happy...
What are your highlights of the past year and what is planned for the future?
I’ve got a couple of great nights coming up this year, including the OAP Jingle Ball on the 19th December at The Sawan in Plymouth (come along and say hi!), and I’m talking to a promoter about some exciting local gigs next year too. Ideally, I would love to play out once a month — it keeps me focused on learning and growing. I just love the whole process: finding new music, experimenting with mixes, and discovering what works together. I find it really therapeutic.
Tell us something positive to inspire future artists.
I’m a big believer that it’s never too late to live your dream. Be brave, say yes to what makes you happy, and no to what doesn’t. You don’t have to be the best — you just have to enjoy it.

What artists have inspired your DJ style?
When it comes to inspiration, I’m not really a fangirl, but back in the day I loved Sasha and Digweed, and I’d always get excited if Ellis D was on the lineup. Jon Pleased Wimmin was brilliant when I saw him recently. But the DJs around me inspire me the most — they’re so supportive and encouraging, and I’ve made some amazing friends of all ages. I even got asked if I was “the mum” while I was playing recently, which really made me laugh!
Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.
My playlist is a mix of house, tech house, Afro, UKG and bassline — tracks that make me smile, and I hope you enjoy them too.
