Artist Interview

"I am starting to get a real itch to go and play to a room full of ravers again..."

Hi Jon, it’s been a while since we had a mix from you. What have you been up to?

Yeah it’s been a while hasn’t it? And it’s great to be back, thanks for having me once again. Well thanks to lockdown I’ve not been up to the usual gigging and have had a lot of time to spare. But I’ve been using my time very productively.

How have you been filling your time during the UK lockdown?

Well I’ve basically filled it with learning to produce my own music. I’ve learned a hell of a lot in this time, obviously I still have a lot to learn but I’m really enjoying the process. I’ve finished about 4 tracks now that I’m happy with so hopefully this month's podcast will be the last one I do that doesn’t feature music that I’ve made myself.

I am starting to get a real itch to go and play to a room full of ravers again through. Especially once I get these tracks mastered and ready to play out.

"Music production has really ignited my love for music again and in all honesty I think I prefer sitting down and creating a tune myself than I do jumping on the decks and having a mix."

Where should you be playing this summer?

Well last summer I was booked for NASS Festival as well as Boardmasters among some more local bookings. Obviously Boardmasters was unfortunately cancelled so it’s now 2 years on the trot without the festival. Let’s hope we can see them return in 2021. So there’s a chance I may of been booked to play there but I try not to think about everything that’s been missed out on because of the virus and try to focus on the positive sides such as finally starting to make my own tunes and the new lease of life I think this lockdown will give to the scene once we can open up shop again.

What’s planned for the next 12 months?

Well this will be massively dependent on how well the relaxing of the lockdown rules go I suppose, however I would love to for normality to be resumed and for the scene to open its doors once again. In effect I feel this lockdown may give the club / nightlife scene a much needed injection. Night clubs were starting to become a little up trendy to go to with everyone opting to save their money for festivals and bigger raves however with everyone being stuck in for so long, people will be raring to go and long for a good club night or any sort of party for that matter.

May even look into putting on a couple of nights myself. Other than that I would love for my production to get to a level where I can start realistically looking to get some music signed and out there! Music production has really ignited my love for music again and in all honesty I think I prefer sitting down and creating a tune myself than I do jumping on the decks and having a mix. So stay tuned and hopefully you’ll see some bits from myself out there soon.

Talk us us through your podcast tune selection.

Well the mix is actually nearly an hour and twenty minutes this time round and that’s largely due to having so many tunes that I haven’t even played out yet for obvious reasons. I actually started off with the intent of keeping it a bit summery and funky for the start of my mix but that went out the window rather quickly. It’s a real rollercoaster ride in terms of the tune selection as it goes from funky to very dirty and back again in quite short periods of time. This is one of the best mixes I’ve ever done in terms of how well it reflects what I’m all about as a DJ. Funky, dirty and dark vibes all under one roof with a bit of neuro and a couple of (slightly) deeper bits among the usual dirty jump up party vibes for this one. Definitely the sort of thing you want to have on whilst getting ready to go out! Whenever that may be.
