Tom Watts: Percussive Tech House Mix
Episode 19/26
Tom Watts
Based in West Cornwall, Tom Watts is a dynamic DJ and percussionist who seamlessly blends deep, melodic, and percussive tech house into an immersive sonic experience perfectly suited for sunset sets. Marking his first podcast DJ mix feature for Little South, Tom’s musical journey began four decades ago behind a drum kit, a foundation that fuels his deep-rooted passion for driving, rhythm-led music. This past year, he captivated crowds across local venues and festivals, and looking ahead to 2027, Tom plans to cast a wider net geographically while integrating live percussion into his DJ performances - even eyeing a long-awaited return to Ibiza.
Influenced early on by the legendary BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes of Judge Jules, alongside pioneering figures like Roger Sanchez, Brandon Block, Alex P, and DJ EZ, Tom’s contemporary sound is now shaped by artists like Hot Since 82, Frankie Wah, Electronic Youth, and Mark Knight. Beyond the booth, he champions a vital message for the next generation of clubbers and artists: protect your hearing, emphasising that earplugs are an absolute necessity to avoid a lifetime of tinnitus.
In this special debut mix for Little South, Tom takes you on a carefully curated journey, opening with the heavily reverbed, Afro-house-infused percussion of Circus by Jemi and moving through Prague Late Nightbefore shifting into high-energy tech house with tracks like Zaro's Pacha, Luch's remix of Rafael's Gotta Be Cool, Max Styler's Body Shake, and Camelphat's Landlords Nightmare. The mix reaches its peak with an exclusive finale: Tom's personal edit of a timeless favourite, King & Early's Walk On Water (TW's I Have A Dream Rub).

Artist Interview
I started my musical journey 4 decades as a drummer...
Please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your DJ sound.
I'm Tom Watts, a Dj/Percussionist based in West Cornwall. I dont like to sit in a genre but if I had to describe my sound its somewhere between deep, melodic, percussive and Tech. I started my musical journey 4 decades as a drummer and so I love driving percussion led music. Lots of my music best suits the sunset...
What are your highlights of the past year and what is planned for the future?
This year has seen me play some great local venues and festivals and the plan for 2027 is to build even more and cast my net wider. Who knows, maybe even make a return to Ibiza! I'll be curating more of a combination of djing and percussion too.
Tell us something that you know now that you wished you knew when you first started DJing.
I wish I knew when I started just how important it is to protect your hearing, perhaps I wouldnt be living in a constant world of ringing! Ear plugs are a must!
...I was mesmerised by those big live essential mixes...

What artists have inspired your DJ style?
When I first started djing I was mesmerised by those big live essential mixes that Judge Jules would put out almost every week it seemed. Roger Sanchez, Brandon Block & Alex P, DJ EZ (UKG was big where I grew up!) were all big influences on my early days, and now I'm a bit more melodic and love artists like Hot Since 82, Frankie Wah, Electronic Youth, Mark Knight all shape the sound I play now.
Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.
Hopefully my mix takes you on a journey. It starts deep with Jemi - Circus, i love the heavily reverbed percussion in this track. Takes on the afro house influence but stays deep with Prague Late Night. We slowly introduce more of a tech feel as we hit Zaro - Pacha (great memories of that club!!). Had to drop in the massive Luch remix of Rafael - Gotta Be Cool, because, well, it's so cool! In to the second half of the mix and its built in to a tech house feel hitting hard with Max Styler - Body Shake and Camelphat - Landlords Nightmare. I've finished with one of my favourite tracks of all time which i've put my own spin on... King & Early - Walk On Water (TW's I Have A Dream Rub). Enjoy!
