Hi, great to have you featured - please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi everyone, I’m No Substitute, based in the South West. I play and produce all things Fun and Bass. Anything that is uplifting, euphoric and with a face-melting, filthy bassline, from Ghettofunk to Bass House and my personal fave Drum and Bass.

I run Smugglers Soundsystem events in Cornwall and I’m a regular on the festival circuit across the country (in normal times!).

Talk us through how you filled your time during the lockdown.

I was never really into live streaming before Covid, but I leaned into it hard this year. Aside from getting to share music with fans it was a great way to do something social in lockdown. All of my friends were vibing in the comments and it gave it everyone something to look forward to.

I’ve also been producing for a number of years now, but I never had the time to finish tracks with a busy gig schedule and everything else life throws at you. It’s been a perfect opportunity to finish some bangers and advance my skills. I’ve also started doing online lessons over zoom in Ableton which has been really rewarding.

I like to mash genres together and build a vibe.

Describe your DJ style.

To risk many a cliché, I’m all about the journey. I like to mash genres together and build a vibe. I love doing blends that you wouldn’t expect and playing mad remixes of old classics. Festivals are where I feel most at home, there’s something about a festival crowd that you don’t always get at normal parties. People are much more care-free and open to new music.

Talk us through your podcast mix track selection.

Flat out Fun n Bass. I’m buzzing to start the mix with one of my recent Ghettofunk creations, which will be coming out soon, keep your eyes peeled on my SoundCloud.

The mix flows from party starting breaks into bouncing Bass House and finishes with a Dnb rinse-out, with a few curveballs and a dub from a local legend.

I had a lot of fun making this mix, my primary aim was to make something that will get people dancing around their kitchen and help them to forget about the lack of parties right now.
