Artist Interview

"I love to play long drawn out 4hr plus sets, starting at around 90-100 bpm and crawling up to 120bpm over a period of time."

Hi Si, what is planned for 2020?

Hey Little South, huge thanks for having me back once again, it's always a pleasure. So 2020 is shaping up to be a rather busy one right now with some remixes and releases on my label and others forthcoming. The 6th release on my label (Enyon Music) is currently out on exclusive promo with Traxsource before it's worldwide release on 9th March. Bootzy is another new artist to the label who is producing some amazing Boogie/Funk music, very reminiscent of the 80's sound, so quite retro! His first EP features 2 tracks and a remix from myself, it's getting some great support from around the world and is slowly climbing the charts. I have another 2 singles forthcoming in collaboration with Keith Thompson - US (Raze - Break For Love) and another local singer Ella Jo.

Outside of the music making I guess the next bit of big news for 2020 is in regards to the new event company I have set up Cindy Dalgleish. Culture Seventy Six (C76) was born out of the desire to bring together in the South West some of the worlds leading artists and DJ's in the Disco, Boogie, Soul and Funk scene. We are looking to do several big events a year with a couple of 'lead in' charity events to support the bigger events, there are some wonderful underfunded agencies in Cornwall doing some wonderful things, so if we and the surround community can help out through dancing to the music we love then I am all for that..

We are doing a boat party in Falmouth on Saturday 23rd May with an afterparty at Toast, the event features Simon Kennedy (Tropical Disco Records), myself, Modir and the wonderful Mongolion Disco Show. This is a ticket only event and all proceeds raised are being donated to the Children's Hospice South West. Numbers on the boat are restricted to 100 persons, and the after party is also quite small so it's quite exclusive.

After this we head to the main event on Friday 31st July in Newquay, bringing to the South West an exclusive appearance from Dr Packer (Glitterbox/Salsoul) as part of his European summer tour. He'll also be accompanied by the most prestigious Michael Gray of Full Intention and Ian Ossia of Downtown Disco and Renaissance fame. I'll be warming up for them alongside Modir, we are also releasing details of some live acts soon plus the room two artists. Tier 1 tickets have now sold out, Tier 2 have just been made available and we have also made some more accommodation, tables and afterparty tickets available, so be quick if you want in on this main event!

Outside of the writing the music and putting on the events I continue to teach music production and recording as well as write / review for Music Tech Magazine.

Which artists are you following at the moment?

Quite a few, there is so much great music out there at the moment and the production levels are going from strength to strength, we are so spoilt right now, but you still have to dig for the gems. Some of the artists doing it for me right now are the likes of JKriv, Bosq, Oldchap, Yuksek, Kapote, Eli Escobar and Art Of Tones, everything they produce hits the spot with me right now. What I like is that they retian and ‘old’ sound in a new production, for me that’s really important and not just because I’m old! (Laughs)

Talk us through your podcast tune selection.

For this mix I felt like putting together something that would represent what I love at a tempo of 120bpm which also included some big dance floor moments, this is the fastest you would probably hear me play nowadays. I love to play long drawn out 4hr plus sets, starting at around 90-100 bpm and crawling up to 120bpm over a period of time. I also wanted to use the turntables so it’s done with Serato and the trusty old 1200’s! The mix is more of a funk infused disco mix with touches of Latin and oodles of Soul. There are a few exclusives and of course some obvious and not so obvious classics, tracks like Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘Happy Feelin’, Cerrone’s ‘Supernature’, ATFC ‘Bad Habits’ and T-Connections’ ‘Do What You Wanna Do’. There are also some awesome re-edits in the mix like Whiskey Disco’s rework of Pontchartrain ‘La Magie’ and there are lots of cool original works from the likes of Mousse T, J-Kriv, Bosq and Sartorial.

Once again, thanks for asking me to compile another mix for you
