DJ Ricardo Reggae Beats Mix
Episode 23/19 | DJ Ricardo | Podcast Mixes
Artist Interview
"I decided to do something different and record reggae style mix with the focus on new music."
Hi Ricardo, great to have you feature with a podcast mix, how’s the summer of 2019 shaped up for you?
Hello and thanks for having me. Summer’s been pretty good, we managed to find a new venue for our club night which suits us perfectly... Stevie my DJ/promoter partner decided to take a break to focus on different projects but fortunately DJ friends Oneshot and Acer stepped in to help run things while bringing a different vibe... and yeah, it’s been all good since.
It’s been a great year for music too, which always makes me happy. Jamaican artists continue to grow and be successful worldwide, sound system culture is spreading throughout Europe and home-grown talent is off the hook right now.
We’re heading straight towards December, where can we catch you playing?
I’m playing our club night ‘Mini Golf Gangsters’ at the Queens Head Easton Bristol Dec 13th and ‘Sunday Social’ at Teranga Piazza Bellini Naples Dec 22nd.
What have you got planned for 2020?
I’m working on some original productions with DJ Oneshot and another three or four mix tapes which I’ve slept on for a while now. I’d like to bring in some younger DJs to play at the club too.
Talk us through the tunes you have chosen for the mix
I’m a big fan of Little South podcasts and being asked to submit one was a lovely surprise. I decided to do something different and record reggae style mix with the focus on new music.
Describe your current DJ sound
I play as much new music as I can which I think is important and I like a simple approach... two decks, a two channel mixer and a monitor. I play two genres, D&B & Reggae. With reggae sets I go outside what would traditionally be called reggae, cutting ska, afrobeat, soca, latin and hip-hop with roots, seppas and danchall.
D&B sets are brilliant fun for me; my first love if you like. I keep the selection fairly light and up-front with long smooth mixes that drop on point, mixed with half-time tunes and the odd hip-hop acapella.
